Arthritis is one of the most prevalent ailments that could see potential benefit from CBD therapies. The National Institutes of Health estimate that over 21% of US adults age 18 or older are suffering from diagnosed arthritis, with many others suffering undiagnosed or arthritis-like symptoms.

For many people with arthritis, relief is hard to come by, and symptom flare ups can be debilitating to their daily lives. Relief, at least that which is easily available, comes mainly in the form of painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications. Whether these are on the mild side, such as ibuprofen, or stronger prescription based medications like opioids, finding alternative means of relief is an option worth exploring.

How Does Arthritis Affect People?

While many people are aware of arthritis as a source of pain and discomfort, not many know of the secondary effects this disease has on those afflicted. These include limited range of mobility, difficulty performing daily tasks, stress, loss of sleep, and fatigue. Sleep disorders and pain management are already areas of interest for CBD therapy, but these are just two of the areas amongst many that affect those with arthritis.

How Can CBD Help?

One resource for people suffering from arthritis can be found at arthritis.org. They report that patients have reported success with CBD for sleep quality, anxiety reduction, and pain relief. At this time these claims are only anecdotal and not supported by quality peer reviewed publications. However, it suggests that CBD could be of use to many people, provided that they first consult with a physician or primary care provider. Never stop medications without consulting a physician.

It’s also worth noting that arthritis is a blanket term for any disease causing joint pain and that there are many different types of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, gout, inflammatory arthritis, and osteoarthritis, to name a few.

Some studies have already found therapeutic potential for cannabidiol, finding that though its method of absorption through the gut means a slower onset of relief, it has the potential to be a great tool for pain management.

What About THC?

Alongside CBD, many people use the psychoactive cannabinoids delta-9 and delta-8. However while delta-9 is found in cannabis plants, delta-8 is only found in very small quantities, so commercially available delta-8 is made in large part from chemically processed CBD.

THC can provide many enticing effects for those suffering chronic pain and fatigue, with a euphoric high, relaxation, and sleep quality, however, psychoactive compounds have their own risks and for many people their jobs prevent them from using it regularly. Not to mention that arthritis symptoms have no set schedule and those suffering need relief at all hours, in many different situations. While THC can be nice every once in a while, the focus of this article is CBD.
