At the end of 2023, the UK government made the historic decision to accept a recommended legal limit for THC in CBD products. This is a great move for legal clarity concerning CBD, something that is lacking all around the world. As CBD continues to grow in popularity, more manufacturers and products seem to pop up every day. This kind of regulation about what exactly such products are allowed to contain is the best way to keep CBD consumers safe. However, one expert warns that ambiguity concerning the legality of CBD products in the United Kingdom hasn’t entirely disappeared.

Is CBD Legal in the United Kingdom?

While the UK hasn’t completely warmed up to the idea of legal cannabis, CBD has been mostly legal throughout England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland since 2018. However, it turns out that “mostly,” is a pretty sizable gray area that seems to be regularly changing. Just last year, the FSA (Food Standards Agency) announced that it would allow more companies to apply for licenses to sell CBD-infused edibles. Technically, CBD edibles aren’t “legal” in the UK until they pass the FSA’s tests.

October of 2023 saw more change for the UK CBD industry, as the FSA dropped the recommended daily limit of CBD from 70 mg to 10 mg. Until this recent legislation, full-spectrum CBD products were not technically legal in the UK, because they contain THC. Previously, legal CBD products in the UK had to be completely THC-free. This means that only broad-spectrum and CBD isolate products were allowed within their borders.

What is the Legal THC Limit for CBD Products in the UK?

The newly acceptable limit for THC content in CBD products is 50 micrograms per serving. Some critics are concerned that this measurement, combined with the recently lowered recommended daily limit of 10 mg of CBD, leaves room for a loophole: Since CBD companies can technically fit more doses into a single product now, does that mean that they can contain more THC? This highlights the fact that even this new legislation has ambiguous language.Even more regulation and oversight is needed if the CBD industry is to ever esccape this legal gray area.

Unfortunately, with so many CBD products on the market, it can be difficult to know what exactly each one contains. In the worst situations, this could lead to undesired effects or even legal ramifications. Consider the consequences of a product that contains THC, but claims not to, being sold in an area where THC is still completely outlawed.

This is why third party lab testing is a crucial part of the CBD industry. From cannabinoids to unsavory pesticides and solvents, lab test results can show what exactly a product contains, and in what amount. Visit Real Tested CBD to review third-party lab test results for all of today’s leading CBD products.
